Free Tools to Measure Website Traffic and Search Performance
A practical overview of the kinds of free analytics and search data small websites can use to understand what is working.
You do not need an expensive analytics stack to learn from website traffic. A few basic tools can show where visitors come from, what they search for, which pages attract attention and where people leave.
Use search-console data
Search-console tools can show which queries produce impressions, which pages appear in search and whether indexing problems exist. This is especially useful for finding pages that are being seen but are not earning many clicks.
Use first-party or privacy-conscious analytics
Page views, referral sources and click events can show which promotion channels are actually sending visitors. Focus on trends and useful actions rather than watching a live counter all day.
Track outbound actions
If your site sends visitors to Etsy, Amazon, a booking service or another marketplace, track those outbound clicks when your setup allows it. That helps distinguish a page that merely gets views from a page that creates shopping interest.
Watch site speed and errors
Performance tools can identify slow pages, large images and technical problems that make the site harder to use. A promotional campaign cannot compensate for a page that is broken or painfully slow.
Keep one simple scorecard
For a small site, a monthly review of search impressions, engaged visits, top landing pages, outbound clicks and conversions may be enough. Add metrics only when they change a decision.
Analytics should answer questions, not create anxiety. Use the data to decide what to improve, publish or promote next.
